EP. 1
SEP. 25th
Getting a job is so hard. Like a real job? The ones where employers aren’t desperate to fill a position and hire you on the spot? Something as simple as an entry-level administrative role and no one seems to be interested.
Now be honest, who the hell are you guys to be requesting college degrees and 3+ years of experience for a quote-unquote “entry-level position”? You all are such liars.
On a real note, no one talks about the varying experiences, as a young person, of applying, interviewing, being rejected, or rejecting a possibility, and it is so wild just how different these are. At this point in my life, I’ve had 4 jobs (working for other people) and they were all very similarly acquired.
I interviewed to be a cashier and got hired on the spot, was set to come in the very next day for training. I took a lifeguard certification course and got hired at the facility that taught it. Now, that was a longer hiring process, but I applied and interviewed within the same week, and I only went one week waiting for their decision.
The third is where I currently work, at a coffee shop, and the owner was so desperate for help that I didn’t even formally apply or interview. My stepdad introduced us and I left my name and number… came in on Monday for training.
My second part time job right now, is being an assistant swim coach. The job is 4 hours a week, and the team who hired me was so desperate that again, I was interviewed one day, hired the next, and working 3 weeks later after getting my certifications. They didn't have any other applicants, nor were they actually looking.
Now, I have a $3-something car payment amongst other bills, and I'm trying to save/move out/ support myself and survive with a little bit of fun, on roughly $300-$450 every paycheck. So, I’m sure that's a vivid enough picture for you, I won’t spend time explaining why I'm looking for another job.
In reality, when you're not looking for a minimum wage job, the application/hiring process is a LOT longer. I’ve applied to at least 20 different places for at least 20 different positions (slightly exaggerating here) over the last several weeks, and I've heard back from 1 place, which happened to be a scam of a job… p.s. If you advertise normal roles like admin, manager, customer service, etc., and then drop the bomb of being completely commissions-based pay at an “orientation” for a sales only position, I hate you.
Anyways, job hunting sucks. I’m not looking for a career necessarily, I’m too young and too inexperienced apparently, but minor administrative positions or something of that sort would be more fun, they would give me experience I don’t already have AND be more lucrative financially. I will definitely update you as that moves forward.
As fun as it would be, to make more money and do something I might enjoy, what I really want to spend my life doing, is writing. I’ve tried freelancing, but unfortunately, for better projects I need a degree… also unfortunately, since I don’t have a degree, the only thing I got asked to write was fanfiction porn. So, we moved on from Fiverr…
I am far from giving up though and have been working on writing my own personal stories, novel ideas, and whatnot. I also am a Wattpad writer….. Yes. So, I do write fanfiction… just not porno scenes for strangers. I’m sorry for any disappointment, it’s not my cup of tea.
Moving on, I started this. That Oldest Daughter has been a process; first deciding I wanted to blog, then regretting not doing it years ago when I first got the idea, ironing out the details on a strict budget, staying up passed midnight when I launched my site and first post just a few nights ago. I have so much planned, and a lot to now look forward to. So that’s exciting.
This is exciting. But it took some time to get here.
Anyway, my tradition for ending these posts is going to include some of my favorite quotes and/or affirmations. As a young female who reads and writes a lot, I like words that speak to my soul. So, from mine to yours, today's quote is from good ol’ Dolly Parton,
“The way I see it, if you want the rainbow, you gotta put up with the rain!”
